SR-22 Insurance Requirements When Moving to Another State

Even though some states don’t require SR-22 insurance, you will still have to fulfill your obligations to your previous state no matter what. You will need to find an auto insurance company in your new state that can also file SR-22 forms in your old state in order to have your insurance transferred.

Do you have to keep SR-22 auto insurance if you move to another state?
An SR-22 form simply states that you have auto insurance in place for a set amount of time. States require you to file an SR-22 form if you have serious violations on your driving record or if you allow your auto insurance to lapse. The amount of time you must carry the SR-22 insurance will vary by state.
According to NOLO, the cost of the SR-22 form itself is pretty cheap, but your auto insurance rates will skyrocket.
But, if you move to another state, do you still have to have SR-22 insurance?
The short answer is yes, you still have to carry your SR-22, even if you move to another state. Although there are a handful of states that don’t require SR-22 insurance, your requirements will still follow you.
For example, let’s say you live in Texas and are required to file an SR-22 form. Then you move to New York where SR-22 insurance isn’t required. You will still have to maintain your original SR-22 for the time period that was mandated. (For more information, read our “Texas SR-22 Insurance“).
You won’t be able to stop the coverage just because you move to another state.

How do you stay in SR-22 compliance when you move to another state?
If your state requires SR-22, and then you move, you will still have to complete your requirements for the amount of time you have left. For example, if you have to have SR-22 insurance for three years, and you move two years in, you will still have to have SR-22 in your new state for one year.
In a nutshell, if your residency crosses state lines, your SR22 coverage will too.
If you move, you will need to:
- Keep your SR-22 form current.
- Find a new insurance company in your new state and start your auto insurance. If your insurance company offers coverage in your new state, you may be able to just transfer your policy without switching companies.
- Your new company and agent will have to file SR-22 forms in both your old state and your new state.
- You can then transfer your SR-22 to your new state and insurance company, but be sure to overlap the coverage for a few days to make sure you are completely covered.
How do I find out if I still need an SR-22? Before you move, contact your auto insurer or the DMV to find out if you need to transfer your SR-22 auto insurance or if you have already met your requirement.
Your insurance company will know how to get an SR-22 removed when you meet your time requirement. Usually, you just have to let your agent know, and the coverage can be dropped.
The Bottom Line
If you have an active SR-22 certificate and move to another state, can you drop your SR22 insurance? The answer is no. You’ll then have a problem obtaining a driver’s license or car insurance in your new state. You have to continue paying your SR-22 insurance premiums for the duration of your requirement. If you have not met your SR-22 insurance requirement from another provider, the new state may revoke your driving privileges as a penalty for having a lapse in coverage.
Even if you still need the insurance, you can find affordable SR-22 auto insurance if you shop around. Every company will offer different rates, so comparison shopping will help you find the best deal. (For more information, read our “What happens if you can’t afford SR-22 insurance?“).
