SR-22 Insurance Overview
If you have had your license suspended or been labeled a high-risk driver by your state, you may be required to obtain SR-22 insurance. It may seem confusing at first, but there is no need to panic.
There are several reasons why you may be required to obtain an SR-22. These include:
- Drunk driving and getting a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) due to drugs or alcohol
- Being found at-fault in a car wreck without having proof of insurance
- Driving without at least the minimum required insurance for your state
- Caught repeatedly with moving violations or other offenses within a relatively short period of time
Requirements for SR-22s are different depending on where you live. The state determines how long the SR-22 must be maintained, but it’s usually three years.

During this time, you must carry liability coverage on your vehicle at all times. If your coverage lapses, your auto insurance company is required by law to notify the DMV of the state you live in. If this happens, your license can be suspended, and you’ll have to pay a reinstatement fee along with any other fines you might own.
And there are different types of SR-22s.
- An operator’s certificate: covers a non-owner motorist who operates a vehicle
- An owner’s certificate covers any cars a driver owns and operates.
- An operators-owners certificate covers vehicles operated by the owner as well as those owned by other drivers in the household.
So, while it may not be fun to deal with, we’re here to help you find what you need to know. This resource was developed to help you navigate the process and get you back on the road as quickly and affordably as possible.
